Enrollment and Demographic Studies

Discovering the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of School Facility Planning

We’ve Mastered the Art of Enrollment Projection

Through our extensive experience with over 25+ years working with enrollment projections, we understand that this work is as much of an art as it is a science.

We’ve learned what information to gather and how to use the forecasting methodologies. The art is in analyzing the output and knowing when and how to use the information.

We Literally Wrote the Book on Student Trends and Enrollment Projections

In 2013, we launched a custom enrollment projection model, Student Trends & Enrollment Projections (S.T.E.P.), that was developed in collaboration with The Ohio State University.

S.T.E.P. was developed based on industry best practices as well as experiences with schools, school districts, and state agencies.

We analyze data, using the S.T.E.P. software, to develop recommended, moderate, low, and high enrollment projections. These projections take into account issues such as rate of growth or decline, and recent economic developments.

Designed with the Long-Term in Mind

As Accurate As It Gets

Our enrollment projection methodologies and tools have given us a history of providing extremely accurate projections for our clients.

Many of our studies have yielded 99% or higher accuracy rates when comparing projected to actual enrollment.

A Ten-Year Look

Our studies project enrollment typically over a 10-year period by analyzing historical enrollment patterns, future residential development, inter-district and intra-district transfers, as well as various other factors that influence a school district’s student population.

We believe that projecting enrollment is not about knowing data,

it’s about knowing people.

Key Steps in Our Enrollment and Demographics Process

Data Collection

The steps involved include collecting and reviewing demographic data from the school district, county, city, and township agencies, the state, and the U.S. Census. Examples of data collected include:

  • Last 10 years of student enrollment data
  • Live birth data
  • Population trends
  • Housing data

Develop Enrollment Projections

We analyze the data, utilizing our Student Trends & Enrollment Projections (S.T.E.P.) software to develop high, moderate, low, and recommended projections. These projections take into account issues such as the rate of growth or decline and recent economic developments.

Final Report

We utilize and assess the information to develop a final report consisting of the historical and projected enrollments, live birth data, U.S. Census data, housing data, census block group projections, graphs, charts, projection descriptions, and recommendations regarding the projected enrollment.

How Findings are Used

To forecast and estimate budgeting, adjust staffing, master planning, boundary study preparation, technology, capacity studies, and utilization studies.
